The contemporary state of Bulgaria covers Europe's south-east corner. Its territory is 111 000 square kilometres and population about 9 million people. Bulgaria is on 12-
13th place among the fifty European states concerning territory and population, but is quite unknown to the European world. It is hardly the right place here to look for
the reasons for this fact. However, the main reason may lie in the circumstance that Bulgaria and the Bulgarians have not "produced" for the last fifty years "bad" news, which would put the country and its citizens on to the top of news agencies' and media's prime-time. In Bulgaria, during the period of communist rule (1944-1989) Czech, Hungarian or Polish events did not happen (which, according to some
people is not so good). The transition to democracy and market economy has also been peaceful and calm without bloodshed that turned in red the transition in Romania and Russia. Bulgaria has avoided the civil war too, which is still shaking neighbouring Yugoslavia. In Bulgaria, there are no ethnical and religious problems, despite the fact that considerable percent of its citizens belong to different
ethnical minorities and several religions are professed (Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Islam and Judaism). The specialists in this area even start talking about Bulgarian ethnical model, ensuring peace, understanding and co-operation between ethnical and religious communities. This is interesting for the specialists, but not for the editors-in-chief of newspapers and magazines. But sadly At least in the countries from the European Union, whose member Bulgaria will be in several years, more about the history of Bulgarian lands, Bulgarians and Bulgaria should be known. And if not about all, at least the fact that the first highly developed civilisation appears
in Vth millennium exactly in the present Bulgarian lands and whose creators are in some sense the first Europeans. It is also necessary to know the main contributions made by the Bulgarians and Bulgarian State during the Middle Ages - the epoch in which foundations of the contemporary European Civilisation are laid. This is also the concept of nation state, successfully implemented in VII-XIVth centuries, which has become model for Europe's development instead of the concept of universal
Christian state, as well as the much more successful mission of the Bulgarians in the Slavic world World that even in these days covers approximately half of the European territory and population.
The author has written this book, precisely led by the thought that it is necessary for some gaps to be filled in the knowledge of the average European about Bulgaria and the Bulgarians.
