Atanas Bozhkov is a professor of long-standing in the National Academy of Arts in Sofia and founder of the Chair of art history and theory. He has also lectured in the Bulgarian Conservatory and in the "St. Kliment of Okhrid" University of Sofia . He is the author of serial documentary TV films shown in Bulgaria and in Italy (1992 by RA1). Among his major realizations is a study of the miniatures of the manuscript of the Byzantine chronicler loannes Skylitzes in the National Library in Madrid which he defended as a doctoral dissertation in 1974. He is the author of over 30 books and some 500 treatises, articles and reviews published in Bulgarian and other European periodicals. Four of his comprehensive monographs on spiritual art in Bulgaria have been published in Germany by Bongers in Recklinghausen, Kupferberg in Mainz and Henschel in Berlin. After the first publication in Bulgaria his book about the famous opera singer Boris Christoff was republished in 1991 by Robson in London.
Several new books by professor Bozhkov have appeared recently: "The Representations of the Saints Cyril and Methodius over the Centuries"
(Sofia, 1989); "The Splendour of Bulgaria" (English and Bulgarian versions, published in 1992 by Georges Naef in Geneva and Sofia); "Petar Mikhailov" (1993, in Japanese, English and Bulgarian).
"Bulgarian Contributions to European Civilization" synthesises over 25 years of studies into numerous Bulgarian artistic and historical monuments preserved in the museums, archives, monasteries and libraries of Italy, Austria, Rumania, Russia and Greece, including the Athos monasteries.
